Understanding Balance Sheets and Income Statements
Discover the key elements of audited financial statements and how chamber leaders can use them to guide strategic decisions. Participants will walk through the key components of nonprofit financials, such as the statement of financial position, statement of activities, functional expenses and cash flows, and learn what these statements reveal about financial health, sustainability and operational effectiveness. This course also highlights essential metrics, budgeting practices and analytical tools that help chamber leaders make informed decisions and communicate financial insights to boards and stakeholders.
After this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the major components of audited financial statements and understand how they apply to chamber operations and reporting.
- Interpret key financial indicators, including liquidity, reserves, revenue diversification and net asset classifications, to assess a chamber’s financial health.
- Analyze the statement of activities to understand revenue mix, program spending and drivers of year‑over‑year changes.
- Evaluate the functional expense breakdown to determine program efficiency, management and general costs, and membership development activity.
